Discover Serenity Within: The Art of Mindful Creation

Women dressed up to go out creatively practice yoga poses on a street in DTLA.

Creativity and Yoga

People tend to think yoga is a physical practice with some breath work. It’s much more than that.

Single-point focus is a limb of yoga. This is practiced on your mat, and you can invite it in to your life in many ways: by silencing notifications on your computer and phone (your mind generally does not need to be clouded with so much immediacy), being present when you speak with your kids, and it also is part of creative pursuits. Creation requires focus, and you may lose yourself in the process - paradoxically connecting more to yourself. Creative pursuits are a powerful tool for cultivating inner calm and tranquility.

Maybe you get lost in the flow of painting, or when you are performing. Your creativity may take place in a kitchen or while tending to a garden. Creativity is fixing a car or making a cabinet. Perhaps you make music or get lost in others’ music. In a simple dance, we can tap into a deeper sense of connection with ourselves and the world around us.

Part of single-point focus and mindful creativity is allowing yourself to let go of expectations and immerse yourself in the present moment.

So grab a pen, pick up a instrument, get on your mat, or simply put on your favorite song and allow yourself to tap into your creative side.

Your mind (and spirit!) will thank you for it.
